Sentinel Literary Quarterly Short Story Competition

Competition Details


Short Stories may be on any subject or style and MUST NOT have been previously published, or posted on a website or blog. Short Stories posted on members-only writing groups for workshop purposes as part of the creative process are not deemed to have been previously published. Short Stories must also not be under consideration for publication or accepted for publication elsewhere, and may not be simultaneously entered into another competition.


Length: Maximum 1,500 words per story.
 

Entry Fees: £4.00/1 story, £8.00/2 stories, £10.00/3 stories, £12.00/4 stories.

(You may enter as many Short Stories as you wish – with the appropriate fees.
 

Prizes: First: £150.00, Second: £75.00, Third: £50.00, Highly Commended: £10 x 3.


First Publication: The three winning Short Stories, and three highly commended Short Stories will receive first publication in Sentinel Champions magazine in print and eBook in November 2012. The authors will each receive a free contributor's copy.

 

Anniversary Year Giveaway: As part of the celebration to mark 10 years of Sentinel Poetry Movement, 1 entrant to this quarter's short story competition will receive a year's free subscription to Sentinel Champions magazine.

Sentinel Literary Quarterly Short Story Competitions have successfully run every 3 months since January 2010 and have become a regular feature in the international writing competitions environment attracting entries from all over the world.

About the judge

Kate Horsley’s poems and short fiction have been published in a number of magazines and anthologies including Storyglossia, Erbacce, Seventh Quarry Magazine, Bliss and Best British Crime Stories and her work has won awards - Sentinel Literary Quarterly Poetry Competition, Words on the Street and Adoption Matters - and been shortlisted for Asham, Templar, Longworth Editors,  Fine Line and Ravenglass Press.  She has just finished her second novel, The Strange Heart of Oona Scollay. Kate gained her PhD at Harvard, where she held a one-year lectureship before returning to the UK to take the Creative Writing M.A. at Lancaster. She has taught literature and writing on both sides of the Atlantic. She currently teaches Creative Writing at Lancaster University, where she is also the Research Associate for the Centre for Transcultural Writing and Research. In the subject line, type SLQ SHORT STORY APRIL 2012 Followed by your Transaction ID. You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt of Short Stories within 48 hours.

  3. Your name or any personally identifying marks may not appear on any of your story's pages.

  4. If you are entering more than 1 story, please start every story on a new page.

  5. IMPORTANT: If your payment name is different from your name or pen name, or if somebody is paying for your entry, clearly indicate this in your cover note.

  6. SKY DRIVE: Please avoid using Sky Drive to submit your work unless you know what you are doing. We have so many people submitting multiple files by Sky Drive that all link to single items.
