Early Monday Train to Ancona Marittima
Dawn kindles clouds like breath over tinder.
A lark bursts from the stationmaster’s roof
in the scarce currency of its pleated wings.
Workweek passengers amble to railcars
as though resigned to never return home,
minds tethered to clocks, numbered tracks.
My gaze drifts up to the lark, its wild flight
over a woman chasing the train, watching
me hold my breath with her eyes.
